Use Pst Viewer Console to automate conversion of .pst files to .pdf
This is an advanced article intended for system administrators and IT professionals. PstViewer Pro is often used in batch automation processes. This article is intended to be a "quick start" on how to use PstViewer Pro in these situations.
This week we have been working with a customer on a .pst to .pdf file email archiving conversion project where PstViewer Pro would be called from a batch file, and we decided to share the process more widely on our site, so as to help others who are in a similar situation. The information in this article may be adapted to other PstViewer Pro export profiles, such as TIF, GIF, MHT, EML, or any custom export profile that you may create with PstViewer Pro's profile editor.
The standard PstViewer Pro installer package includes an executable file called pstviewerconsole.exe
PstViewerConsole is the command line tool.
There are numerous criteria that may be passed to PstViewerConsole to indicate how it will operate. These criteria are discussed more fully in PstViewer Pro's help file (Help>Help> User Interface > Command line parameters).
Usage: PSTViewerConsole.exe [options] [<file1> [<file2>]
The options may include the name of any of Pst Viewer Pro's export profiles, like:
"C:\Program Files\Encryptomatic, LLC\PSTViewer Pro\PSTViewerConsole.exe" --e "TIFF" "C:\your_file.msg"
In the above example, PstViewerConsole would use the export profile called "PDF-attchments converted/included," which will convert email in a .pst file to .pdf files.
These export profiles may be customized from within PstViewer PRO (Export>Export Profile>Edit Profile) and may include some very specific criteria, such as how to name the resulting .pdf files, which file sizes to use, page orientation, etc.
Once a profile is customized, the changes in that profile can be used with PstViewerConsole.exe
For this particular customer, it was necessary to edit the file naming scheme so that subject, sender and date would be included to the file name, and we needed to export to a specific path. This required editing the file naming scheme like in pictures below, so subject, sender and date will be included in the file name.
Here is a tip on how to set a Windows path: you can create a custom folder tree structure based on any of the fields if you separate them with " \ " symbol.
PstViewerConsole is a very powerful part of the PstViewer Pro system. It gives you tremendous flexibility and control. We hope you have found this tutorial helpful. Please contact our support team if you need any further assistance.
